Male. 52. Working-class. Mental patient. I like art & literature.

I have Schizoaffective Disorder (a combination of Schizophrenia & Bipolar Disorder) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Obligatory idées fixes are the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), the Taxpayers’ Alliance and Alexa Chung.

I have been a rough sleeper and have an impressive homelessness portfolio including Soho streets, hostels, squats/derelict buildings, local authority temporary accommodation etc.

I have one O level (Geography, Grade C).

I fancy myself as a bit of an autodidact. More Ernest Hemingway/Frida Kahlo* than Adolf Hitler.

I have been a voluntary sector playboy, writing fundraising applications for small charities and community groups and undertaking web design. I now do occasional voluntary work when mental health permits.

If I ever get my shit together I’ll write about social class and art things I enjoy. I’ll try to get my facts straight. I’m not making any promises about the grammar.

Please note I’m going to punch the next person on Twitter who calls me a hipster: apart from being 52 (!) I have a proud industrial working-class heritage. One of my favourite accounts on Instagram is blackcountrytype.

*You can’t throw a stick in the air at the moment in South Kensington without it hitting someone talking about Frida Kahlo. Please note I was citing her as an inspiration on this website long before those bastards at the V&A got in on the act.

My Instagram account is a mix of lowlife wankery, mental health moaning, and details of art gallery visits. I see myself as taking people on a journey – or for a ride, depending on how you look at it. I’m pioneering the hashtag, #ThoseBastardsAtTheVandA.

On Twitter there are people who think they should be running the country, who would launch nuclear weapons if you question their retweet policy. I wonder if some of the mavens of leftwing Twitter are aware that there are teenagers doing make-up tutorials who have far more social media followers than they do. You won’t find 13-year-old girls trying to annihilate each other every time they have a falling out over mascara. I’m going to upset some people now: politics is more important than make-up.

As you may have guessed, I have largely withdrawn from Twitter. I just talk to some fellow mentals. As is almost always the case anywhere in the world, the mentals on Twitter are some of the sweetest people you could want to meet.

Response times

Comments appear immediately on this site, but you may not get a reply for a while. The same on social media. I almost always reply to comments, messages and tweets, but sometimes not for a days, or even weeks! Ditto email. I’m mental and I’ve only got the one O level (Geography).
